8 Free Hats for Fall for Knitting and Crouchet

8 Free Hats for Fall for Knitting and Crouchet

Whether you knit or crochet, now that we're halfway through August it's time to think about what we're wearing this fall! Check out these free knit and crochet hat patterns I found on Ravelry for you!

Knitted Hats

The Boyfriend Hat by Andrea Riddle

This is a great, easy bulky hat that you'll finish in a couple of nights. For this one I love Boston Fiber Company Genni or Chunky Trevor from Dye Mad Yarns. Both are great single ply yarns and while Genni is a little bulkier than Chunky Trevor both would make a beautiful knit hat.

Basic Beanie by Emily Bolduan

This beanie is great for new knitters looking for a go-to hat pattern. The Basic Beanie is an easily adaptable pattern with many sizes and options for knitting flat or in the round. Use three colors or one or as many as you want! You could use one skein of a DK weight yarn like Lucia DK from Dirty Water DyeWorks or Baker Street DK from Boston Fiber Company.

Berry Baby Hat by Michele Sabatier

I love this adorable baby hat pattern. It's quick and easy and is possibly the cutest thing I've ever seen. The pattern recommends a worsted weight yarn, but I think Lucia DK minis from Dirty Water DyeWorks would be amazing, but if you want to go worsted I think Sweater from Blue Sky Fibers would be perfect.

Ophidia Hat by Macarena Silva

If you're looking for an easy, meditative colorwork pattern show off your skills with the Ophidia Hat! I love the style of this and what a great way to show off your colorful yarn. This is another DK weight pattern and I think it would be amazing in Superwash BFL from Circus Tonic or Scout from Kelbourne Woolens.

Crochet Hats

Tulip Hat by Luciana Luna

Using short rows and working the pattern flat you can create this pretty crochet hat. The pattern recommends Aran weight yarn, but a hefty worsted would do just as well. I love the idea of this hat in You Knit I Dye Merino Aran for a bright, hand-dyed version or Cascade 220 for a neutral or primary color version.

Fisherman Beanie by Wool Intentions

Use worsted weight yarn to make this classic beanie. This is a great project for beginner crocheters, but also for seasoned crocheters who want a quick project to keep use up a skein or two of yarn. I think this hat would be beautiful in Rhapsody Fiber Arts naturally dyed Classic Worsted or Cascade 220 for a more cost-effective version.

Everyday People by Brenda K. B. Anderson

This is your solid slouchy hat that looks good on everyone. Show off hand dyed, variegated yarn with this simple stitch pattern, I love the idea of using one of Dye Mad Yarns Tortie Sport for a bright, funky beanie. Or use a tonal like Andorra from Kelbourne Woolens.

Karpe Diem by Akabeko Botam

I had to put this hat on the list. Is it practical? No. Is it fun? Yes times a thousand. I love this hat. I think it would be so fun to make and perfectly silly. I would use Lucia DK from Dirty Water DyeWorks in both the full skeins and mini version for your eyes and fins. If you wanted to use cotton Ricorumi DK from Universal Yarn has the color palette and options that could make you an amazing hat.
